Johan Rockström is one of the world’s foremost researchers on global sustainability and environmental issues. He assisted the internationally renowned team of scientists who presented the Planetary Threshold Framework, first published in 2009 with an update in 2015. The nine thresholds developed are considered fundamental to maintaining a sustainable future for our planet. This framework has been embraced as a strategy for sustainable development and has been used to assist governments, businesses, organizations striving for sustainable development.

Before Johan focused on our planet, he researched resilience in water and in different water environments where he became an expert. After completing a PhD at Stockholm University’s Department of Systems Ecology in 1997, he spent almost two decades working in applied water research in tropical regions. He has also published research on agricultural systems, land use and ecosystem services.

In addition to his research that helps guide policy, Rockström acts as an advisor to several governments and business networks. He also acts as an advisor on sustainable development issues at notable international meetings, such as the UN General Assemblies, the World Economic Forum and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conferences (UNFCCC, also known as COP).

He is the Chair of the Steering Committee of CGIAR’s Water, Land and Ecosystem Research Program, a member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Network (SDSN), and a member of several other committees and boards.

Rockström serves as Chair of the Advisory Board of the EAT Foundation, a network that integrates knowledge of food, health and sustainability to work to provide environmental boundaries for healthy diets for the growing global population. He is one of 20 international researchers working on the EAT-Lancet Commission, an assessment of the global food system and whether a transformation towards healthy and sustainable diets is possible. This assessment is the first systematic analysis of the food system on a global scale and will be completed in 2017.

Rockström has published over 100 research articles, including articles in Science and Nature, as well as 20 book chapters. He has also published four books: The Human Quest (2012) and Big World Small Planet (2015) with National Geographic photographer, Mattias Klum; co-author Water Resilience for Human Prosperity (2014); and Bankrupting Nature (2012) together with the Swedish writer and politician Anders Wijkman.

As a persuasive speaker, he collaborates with popular media on issues related to sustainable development.
